Weekend Style: Wearing Fine Jewelry with Casual Pieces

Posted on September 24, 2014 by Mary Hood | 2 Comments

Many of us have a favorite piece of statement jewelry. We often think of statement jewelry as something to be worn with the proverbial little black dress. With a little creative pairing, however, fine jewelry can be worn beautifully with more casual outfits.

The weekend is usually our time to relax, do the activities we truly love, and, perhaps best of all, be our "away from work" selves. For many of us, this means jeans and a comfy T-shirt or cozy sweater. But just because we're comfortable doesn't mean that we don't want to look fabulous!

By adding a touch of luxury to your weekend ensemble, you can feel your best while expressing your inner sparkle. Whether you plan to stroll through the farmer's market or curl up on the couch with your Kindle, you'll find that a pretty bangle or ring adds a hint of charm.

Here are a few ways to wear your favorite fine jewelry with casual outfits:

fine jewelry, casual clothes

Cruising boutiques or meeting friends for coffee? Make like Gwyneth Paltrow (above) and wear a jewelry-as-art necklace with a soft white tee and designer jeans. For cooler weather, top the look off with a fitted blazer rolled at the sleeves.

Blue Topaz and Tsavorite Garnet Radiance Ring

Planning to spend Saturday morning with a best seller? Why not wear a special gemstone ring? A bit of a book nerd myself, I love catching a glimpse of my favorite ring while I devour anything by Margaret Atwood. It always makes me feel a touch glamorous (even on the couch!). Pair with jeans or comfy cotton dress.

Fall is a lovely time for picnics--and cozy-chic sweaters. Dress up your picnic ensemble by layering fine, handmade necklaces in colors that contrast with the color of your sweater.  (Don't forget to pack a thermos of coffee and some delicious pastries!)

A simple tank and eclectic trousers paired with a gold statement necklace make the perfect outfit for visiting the art museum. When worn with flats, the ensemble is comfortable yet dressy enough for your sophisticated surroundings.

Get creative! Pair bold costume jewelry with delicate gold pieces. Mix and match antiques with new pieces. Combine trends. If you're going to pile on the jewels, however, keep your outfit simple. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe says of her style: "My basics are black, white, or neutral, and I'll wear a ton of jewelry or carry a brightly colored bag."

Timeless Sterling Silver Twig Hoop Earrings

Twig Bangles

For some parts of the country, it's still summer. Vacation may be over, but temperatures are still high! Embrace the long summer season with flirty, reclaimed sterling silver bangles and hoop earrings. Wear with a cute summer dress or even denim cutoffs!

Most importantly, enjoy your jewelry! Wear it to please yourself, and if others notice and admire, all the better :)
