One of the most festive trends of this year involves jeweled, or gem-detail, necklines, and these bedazzled necklines are appearing on dresses, sweaters, and blouses. Although tops of this style may be easy to find at your local mall, you can have a bit of added fun by making your own, custom jeweled neckline.
Add jewels individually:
What you’ll need:
Crystals or rhinestones designed to be added to fabric (like these)
Fabric glue
A top or dress of your choice
Needle and thread (preferably in a shade that matches either the crystals you’re using or the fabric you’re sewing them to--or better yet, find clear thread.)
What to do:
Arrange your gems around the neckline. It may help to have a picture of a top with a neckline that inspires you. Glue each crystal in place with your fabric glue, and then let the glue fully dry. Reinforce each crystal with a few stitches. When necessary, spot clean or very gently hand wash. Don’t let the glued part sit in water for too long. Air dry.
Attach a piece of costume jewelry:
This option may be the most involved of the three.
What you'll need:
A rhinestone or crystal costume necklace
Fabric glue
A top or dress of your choice
Needle and thread (preferably in a shade that matches either the crystals you’re using, the metal of the costume necklace, or the fabric you’re sewing them to)
Toothpicks
Wire cutters (if you’re planning to only use a portion of the necklace)
What to do:
If necessary, use the wire cutters to the necklace to a desirable size. Arrange the necklace around the neckline. Do a few simple stitches across the necklace to temporarily secure it in place while you permanently secure the individual segments of the necklace to the fabric. To do so, use a toothpick to careful apply fabric glue to segments of the necklace and the fabric. Reinforce each gem or segment with a few stitches. Once you’ve fully secured the necklace to the top, you can remove the temporary stitches. When necessary, spot clean or very gently hand wash. Don’t let the glued part sit in water for too long. Air dry.
The 5-second version:
Find a simple, solid-color top. Put on a jeweled choker that roughly shares the same circumference of the neckline of your top. Voila!
